Biography Randal Harrison Hoecherl charms, challenges and inspires listeners of all ages. Critics have simultaneously declared him reminiscent of Nicoli Pagannini, Stephane Grapelli, Al DiMeola and Frank Zappa. His mastery of such diverse styles has garnered him an EMMY nomination for composition and three Madison Area Music Awards for Jazz Artist of the Year, Classical Artist of the Year and Blues Artist of the Year. His diverse performance credits include work with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, jazz Bassist Ben Tucker, and legendary drummer Sam Lay of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
Harrison is known nationally as an innovative jazz violinist and composer. Critics claim his performances as "Captivating" and "Exhilarating". "Brilliant musicians" has described the Randal Harrison Trio's self-titled 2007 release. Locally, Randal Harrison is probably best known for his long time collaboration with Madison's own Honor Among Thieves. His tenure with Honor Among Thieves includes four CDs: Four Songs (1993), The Vision and a Friend (1996), Primordial Soup du Jour (1998), The Blue God (2001); and the documentary Film: When the World Runs Fast (2005). While calling Madison, WI home, Harrison has worked with a who's who of Madison musicians including: Geri DiMaggio, Yid Vicious, Hannah Jon Taylor, The Early Music Ensemble, Reptile Palace Orchestra and Harmonious Wail.
Harrison appears on over 100 recordings including works for Naxos World, SRM, Boat Records, db Musique, Spiritwood and StringFling Records. In addition to his work as performer, composer and recording artist, Randal Harrison travels as a clinician of improvisation and violin studies. Randal directs a violin studio in Madison WI where he teaches classical music to young musicians and alternative styles to advanced violinists.
